Putting the Spring in Spring Semester

By Clarisse Koo ’28

Nothing says spring like early March — The return of t-shirts and shorts as Claremont enjoyed a warm and sunny week at the end of February. On my walks to class, I’ve noticed the trees beginning to brighten with new green leaves, and the return of lizards darting across the sidewalks. Squirrels are also back, scampering around Marston and climbing up trees. It’s starting to truly feel like a change of pace with the sun out.

Another iconic sight at Pomona is seeing students out relaxing on Marston Quad when the weather starts to warm up. Frisbee, spikeball, football — everyone’s out enjoying the weather and the feeling of warm grass against their feet. And if sports don’t catch your eye, there’s always a handful of people scattered around soaking up the sun whether it be lazing on a picnic blanket and taking a nap, reading a book or catching up on some homework. I took this opportunity to throw around a frisbee between classes and toss around a rugby ball with a couple teammates during the week—it’s a great open space to do anything outdoors! Coming from Hong Kong, a place that was always way too hot and humid to be outside for more than 20 minutes, I’ve loved the weather here and enjoying the walks around campus.

Now that summer weather is right around the corner, I’ve quickly taken advantage of this by having meals out on the quad too! Students have access to green boxes which are essentially take out boxes from the dining hall. They’re super useful when you have a club or meeting and don’t have time to sit down and eat at a dining hall (or if you’re feeling a change in scenery like me). My friends and I grabbed a green box, filling our boxes with Frary brunch food and made our way to Marston. It’s always nice to spend time out in the sun and it’s easy to take it for granted until the occasional cloudy or rainy day reminds me how fortunate we are to have clear skies and gorgeous sunsets in the midst of winter.
